Thousands of patients come to the Oregon Health & Science University and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital to receive long-term care unavailable in their communities.

OHSU’s 118,000-sq-ft Rood Family Pavilion is designed to help patients and families who face a medical crisis and the logistical and financial demands of finding housing in an unfamiliar city for an extended period of time.

The pavilion has 76 rooms that can accommodate more than 1,000 patients per year and a guesthouse for patients and their families to rest, work, prepare meals and gather, both indoors and out.

The facility’s exterior skin playfully reflects flocks of migratory birds to make the building more inviting to both children and adults.

The team used the close coordination of integrated project delivery to help solve challenges quickly, including an unexpected, post-design change to the steel package. IPD delivery also helped in designing the parking garage screen within a one-week deadline. Designers communicated in real time with metal fabricators and installers in the same room as the design evolved. Immediately knowing the specifications for various metal panels allowed the team to design the screen around raw-material dimensions and thereby minimize waste.
