Founded in 1890, Sundt Construction is the oldest Southwest-based firm participating in ENR Southwest's Top Contractors survey. And while the firm has achieved notable milestones over its long history, Sundt is certainly not resting on its laurels.

In addition to growing its Southwest regional revenue by more than $54 million during 2023, Sundt Construction notched other notable achievements and moved forward on other initiatives during the past year.

During 2023, for example, Sundt developed its Stop The STCKY safety program—STCKY stands for the S*** That Can Kill You—which won the firm an AGC Grand Award for Innovation earlier this year.

Also, the company's G. Michael Hoover KAPBCS Training Center (shown above), an NCCER-accredited training sponsor and assessment center, opened in summer 2023. The facility is the home of Sundt’s rapidly expanding workforce development programs.

For these and many other achievements during the past year, ENR Southwest has named Sundt Construction as its Southwest Contractor of the Year for 2024. We'll profile Sundt in ENR Southwest's July 1 print edition.

Early Top Contractor Survey Results

Still, Sundt Construction certainly isn't the only Southwest firm riding a rising tide of construction revenue. As ENR Southwest has reported on numerous occasions over the last few years—including most recently via our most recent Top Design Firms ranking—construction activity has been occurring at a heightened level for the past several years in the states of Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico. Industrial projects—such as Intel's $20-billion chip plant expansion in Chandler, Ariz.—have generated a significant portion of the Southwest's surging construction economy, but certainly not all.

Illustrating a diversity of strong markets across the region are the preliminary results of ENR Southwest's still-ongoing Top Contractors survey, which officially closes May 20. While several notable firms that participated in last year's survey have yet to send in their 2023 numbers to ENR, the overall revenue of those that have done so—$12.7 billion—has already surpassed last year's survey total of $12.2 billion.
