New York state could replace electricity from the Indian Point nuclear power plant through improved efficiency and imported hydropower, says a Feb. 23 study by the Natural Resources Defense Council and Riverkeeper. The state and Entergy Corp., Indian Point’s owners, in January agreed to shut the 2,000-MW plant by 2021. The report says that loss could be offset solely with stated-boosted energy-efficiency standards; further, advancing the 50% renewable-energy deadline, set to be met in 2030, would help, too. If the state pursues exports, energy efficiency and renewables, wholesale power rates would rise about 2.1%, the report notes.
