ENR New York congratulates Syska Hennessy Group as the region's Design Firm of the Year for 2021!

We'll publish an in-depth profile on the MEP engineering, information and communication technology, and commissioning engineering firm in the May 2021 issue of ENR New York/New England. That's also the Top Design Firms edition of the regional magazine. (By the way, companies have until March 29 to submit their New York Regional Top Design Firms surveys: click here for the form.)

The international Syska Hennessy Group, headquartered in New York City, saw a 21% increase in its revenue from New York and New Jersey states, to $39.8M from 2019 to 2020. That partly may be because it designed health care facilities to fight the spread of the coronavirus, projects like the North Central Bronx Hospital’s conversion of ICU beds for COVID-19 patients, the New Bridge Medical Center’s non-acute COVID-19 triage tents in New Jersey and, outside the region, conversion of spaces into negative isolation rooms in California and North Carolina.

Its largest project to break ground, though, wasn’t in health care but in commercial, specifically the LEED Platinum-to-be-certified BlackRock offices at 50 Hudson Yards in NYC – whose price seems to be confidential for now, but reportedly drew $25M in state tax credits to keep its offices in the city.

In its own offices, Syska Hennessy’s internal Advocating for Professional Equality, or SHAPE, team has remained focused on diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.

Finally, the firm was on teams that won several ENR Regional Best Project honors in 2020, including the Long Beach Civic Center, which earned the SoCal Project of the Year award.
