Duke Energy will decommission its Crystal River nuclear plant in Florida about 50 years earlier than planned under an agreement with Accelerated Decommissioning Partners. ADP, a joint venture between NorthStar and Orano, will decommission the plant for $540 million. The plant was shut down in 2009 after cracks appeared in the containment structure (above) when then-owner Progress Energy replaced steam generators. Duke, which acquired Progress, decided to permanently close the plant in 2013 and planned to decommission it by 2074. ADP will begin decommissioning in 2021 and finish by 2027. The spent nuclear fuel will remain on site.
