Construction is underway on the Terminal 5 Parking Garage project at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. The effort is a joint venture with Clayco, AECOM Hunt and Bowa.

“The crew was pinning sections together of a crane that had a longer boom arm than normal to access the site of the new parking garage,” says McFarland, who was on site to document the tower crane’s assembly.

“The process was slow and precise dealing with large sections,” McFarland recalls. “The workers on the boom arm gave it scale as well as the jet flying by, telling the story of being at an airport.”

Scope of work for this $110-million project includes construction of a six-level, cast-in-place, post-tension parking structure supported by two helical ramps at the ends of the garage for movement between levels.

Capacity will reach approximately 1,700 vehicles, with room for an additional 650 vehicles in surface parking areas. The project also includes two vehicular bridges, curbside expansion access and modifications to the I-90 on-ramp.
