Restoration of the damaged Pensacola Bay Bridge has reached a key milestone toward its planned March 2021 reopening, with concrete pours completed on the first new deck sections. In the four months since nearly 30 unmoored construction barges from an adjacent bridge project crashed into the year-old, four-lane concrete structure during Hurricane Sally, Florida Dept. of Transportation contractors have demolished 21 fully and partially damaged spans and removed 66 damaged I-beams and five trophy pieces. More than 20 beams from the bridge’s multiuse path are also being replaced. To keep repair work on schedule, the project team is expanding round-the-clock pile-driving work. FDOT has not announced a cost for the expedited repair effort, nor has the agency resolved responsibility for the barge damage with Skanska USA Southeast, the lead contractor for the $430-million bridge replacement project.
