Post-Pandemic Home Design Pushes Privacy and Wellness to the Forefront

Why homeowners may be holding onto some pandemic-driven design preferences for the long haul

Throughout the course of the pandemic, home design preferences have changed to accommodate new lifestyle transformations as homeowners take on remote work and seek out additional space and comfort. As we round the bend into year two of the COVID-19 pandemic, our homes have changed in more ways than one, but some new design choices may prove to be timeless solutions long after the pandemic ends.

According to Realtor.com, a scaled-down home office offers an efficient use of space to create privacy without sacrificing livability for those still working from home, and homeowners are also prioritizing HVAC and air-filtration systems to combat airborne toxins taking the spotlight in a more health-conscious world. Color is making a comeback after years of muted minimalism, and natural accents like succulents and ivy can also reduce stress and make living spaces seem lighter and fresher.

The return of fine dining

With less working from home and the kids back in school (at last!), you might discover that you own a large piece of furniture in the dining room. Yup, that big ol’ dining table has returned with a vengeance, as “spaces start shifting back to their original use,” notes Turner.

Although you might be excited to light those candles and throw your first dinner party in years, group sizes probably won’t balloon anytime soon, thanks to ever-present variants wafting across the globe.
