Color brings projects to life

Placing warm colors at an entrance helps invite visitors to enter, especially to escape cold weather. Mixing bright and dark tones creates a striking contrast that gains attention and activates the senses.

Color is a language that everyone understands. Although many features of a building can catch our attention, few speak louder than color. It is often the first thing that we notice and is an essential component of first impressions. Color conveys emotion and creates a unique experience.

At Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings, we understand that color shapes our world and how we experience it. Our scientists continue to make advancements that expand the spectrums of rich, vivid colors. We have created a variety of coatings that can shift colors, sparkle, shine, and have texture. These properties bring architectural visions to life and can be used to accent other features.

In commercial spaces, color can help represent a brand and tell a story, creating a unique customer experience. Using a specific color pallet can bring consistency to customers across various location. Color can also bring attention to specific products or services or calm and comfort visitors.

Iridescent Home Turns Heads in the California Sun

When motorists drive by the new home of Ihlan and Kamer Eser, heads turn. The exterior of the home resembles a giant iridescent lizard basking in the Sacramento sun. The rainbow of colors shifts in appearance when viewed from different angles, like a mirage.

Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings mica-based Kameleon Coatings creates a mesmerizing effect for this metal-clad new home. The Dusty Rose Kameleon coating causes the facade to change from green to yellow to silver and bronze to dark brown depending on the angle of the view and the time of day.

The sustainability features of the house are equally impressive. The net-zero home features insulated metal roof and wall panels plus an additional layer of insulation. Wastewater from the home is treated for use in irrigation. The geothermal system uses the consistent temperatures below the earth’s surface for heating and cooling. LED lights throughout the home save energy on lighting and, the 18 kW solar system on the roof provides onsite renewable energy.

“I’ve had a good life,” said Ihlan Eser, who was also the general contractor and the architect for the project. “I felt like I wanted to pay back to the earth in one form or another.

Specifying Metal Coatings

During the design process, the time comes when building products are specified. When deciding on the coatings for metal wall and roof systems, it’s important to consider certain characteristics and qualities. Performance and color retention, project location, coating color, and warranty requirements are all crucial factors.

Exposure to UV rays and humidity can degrade coatings, causing chalking, blistering, fading, and corrosion. Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings tests coatings extensively to determine how all aspects perform in real-world conditions. Long-lasting coatings help preserve the aesthetic qualities of a project. Excellent color and gloss retention are essential to keep projects pristine.

Project location impacts the climatic conditions the coating must endure. Selecting a coating involves determining the best top coat, resin, pigmentation, and primer for a given location. Color selection also includes determining the correct pigments, which impact coating performance.

Our color scientists are skilled in selecting pigments and coatings that are resistant to chalking and fading and can weather the elements. For example, clear coatings are often applied when salt residue is common because it releases it more readily than pigmented surfaces. Clear coats are also used to help promote UV durability.

Our coating experts are available to provide a wealth of knowledge in specifying the best coatings for a project, given the climate, substrate type, performance properties, budget, and aesthetic consideration.
