Crews began dismantling the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge in March, thus initiating the last act in a long saga to replace the 1960s-era structure located in North Carolina’s Outer Banks. To take down the existing 2.3-mile-long bridge—located within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore—PCL Construction and subcontractor Cherry Creek Recycling are saw cutting the deck and superstructure piece by piece, as well as removing about 1,800 concrete piles. That material will then be barged out to sea and used to create four reef sites located 6 to 12 miles offshore. Demolition work should take about 10 months to complete, PCL says. Roughly 1,000 ft of the existing bridge will be retained to create a fishing pier. The replacement bridge has been named after former state Sen. Marc Basnight (D).
