Use of Live Field Data Lags: Study

July 16, 2020

Two-thirds of construction firms do not use real-time field data collection methods, relying on paper and spreadsheets, according to research conducted by AboutTime Technologies, supplier of the WorkMax field-data app.

The survey of 134 people in construction was conducted in June 2020, with about three-quarters working in firms with 1,000 or fewer employees.

The survey (available here) also indicates that 14 percent of respondents only use paper and spreadsheets, and 40 percent use between three and five apps, which, says the AboutTime, contributes to the difficulty of obtaining live field data.

One in five respondents have access to live equipment and tools data, but one-third do not track equipment at all. About 18 percent use either paper or a spreadsheet, according to the report.

Collection of live safety data increases with company size, the report says, with 75 percent of respondents in companies with more than 10,000 employees collecting live safety data.
