Ohio Community Mulls Lawnmower Ordinance

Lorain City Council wants to stop people from stockpiling machinery and implements on their lawns, citing desire to protect the safety, health, peace and general welfare of the public.

As reported by Richard Payerchin of The Morning Journal, the City Council of Lorain, OH, has drafted an ordinance that would prohibit residents from storing machinery and implements powered by internal combustion engines in the front, side and back yards of a house. This would include things like lawnmowers, tractors and snowblowers.

You can view the draft ordinance here, which continues to be reviewed and discussed by the City Council. Some have expressed concern that potential loopholes may need to be closed. Others have expressed concern that the law, should it become law, won’t even be enforced. They are looking at specifics such as allowable storage duration, whether that’s 24 hours or perhaps up to several days.

Regardless, the objective of this proposed ordinance is to protect the safety, health, peace and general welfare of the public. Violators would see their equipment removed and placed in secure storage.
