The design and construction team delivered a $33.3-million facility that is dedicated to student-athletic training, wellness, academic excellence, campus spirit and recruitment at the University of Texas at San Antonio. The two-story facility consists of all-sport team spaces, including locker rooms, an equipment room, a sports medicine area, offices for coaches, team meeting rooms, a weight room, athletic administration offices and academic spaces. The front foyer also features a lobby with a hall of fame for alumni.

Among the challenges initiated by the COVID-19 pandemic, reviewing material samples proved particularly difficult. Sample parties didn’t work over Zoom calls, so the team had to mail samples to various stakeholders. This made creating consensus and getting approvals difficult to achieve in a timely fashion.

While the campus was shut down, maintenance staff and coordinators were not available to offer knowledge about the campus, including the location of utilities. Contractor Joeris coordinated with its engineering consultants and trades to locate existing on-campus utilities despite outdated documents and no visible markings as guides. That coordination allowed site demo, utility work and new work around the construction area to be installed in proper sequence.

Despite the challenges, the project was completed on time in July 2021, allowing the UTSA athletic department to move into its new home the following month.
