When an electrical service delay threatened to derail the schedule, the project team says it collaboratively orchestrated a plan to bring the project back on track.

After expediting delivery of electrical gear and working around the clock during the summer of 2018, the $58.7-million project, which broke ground in January 2017, was delivered on time and within the original guaranteed maximum price by the fall of 2018, the team says.

The team executed significant structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades and exterior facade improvements that were planned for the original facility.

The team also constructed an addition to expand the cafeteria and a two-story wing that includes an auxiliary gym, black box theater and an art classroom.

A custom sunshade and geothermal loop system that incorporates 255 wells—drilled some 500 ft deep in the existing football and softball fields—are two features that helped the project team aim for LEED Silver certification. The team relied on five drill rigs that were on site full time to complete the geothermal work on schedule. “The geothermal loop system includes 120 heat pumps located in the building at all levels for a complete sustainable, renewable energy source,” the team says.

The 700 onsite workers completed more than 419,345 hours on the job. The project had an OSHA recordable incident rate of 1.05 and a lost-time accident rate of 0.52.
