[VIDEO] Take a Virtual Drive on New Indiana Interchange

Dec. 17, 2020

Work is officially underway to rebuild the North Split in downtown Indianapolis. Although construction will last two years, a video from the Indiana Department of Transportation and design firm HNTB shows what the interchange will be like when it’s done.

As the video shows, the rebuild interchange will flip the two primary exits: I-65 traffic will enter on the right, while I-70 will enter on the left. The I-70 curve will be easier to navigate than its counterpart in the current interchange. INDOT has called the current curve “abrupt.”

The video also shows how the new design will bring vehicles from the split to the right of vehicles from westbound I-70. The Pennsylvania Street exit will be open to vehicles coming from the split, but a concrete barrier will block the exit from westbound I-70 traffic. This will eliminate westbound I-70 access to the exit, but also eliminate the potentially dangerous split.
