Cargo transfer operations at the Port of Long Beach are poised to become both greener and more efficient over the next decade with the $1.567-billion Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility. HDR, which has been involved with the program for more than 20 years, recently received the go-ahead for final design of the project, which will allow longer trains to be assembled with greater frequency, ease roadway congestion and improve air quality.

The 171-acre project’s first element, a locomotive facility with a functional 10,000-ft-long track, is scheduled to begin construction in 2024. Additional tracks will be added as construction continues, with the entire rail support facility slated for completion in 2032. HDR will also incorporate electrification capabilities for future locomotive charging in the long-term facility master plan and site improvements.

AECOM/STV

Glassboro-Camden Line

The joint venture of AECOM and STV Inc. will provide engineering, project management and additional professional services for the proposed 18-mile light-rail transit system in southern New Jersey. To be located within an existing rail corridor that previously handled passenger service, the planned 14-stop GCL will provide central business district access and convenient connections with other regional public transportation networks. The project could be completed as early as 2028.

Michael Baker International

Bangerter Highway-4700 South Interchange

Located in West Valley City and Taylorsville, Utah, the existing single-point urban interchange will be replaced with a grade-separated exit and entrance ramps to both highways. Michael Baker International is serving as lead designer in partnership with an RLW/Clyde joint venture, under a progressive design-build contract with the Utah Dept. of Transportation. The $166-million project is scheduled to be complete in winter 2025. MBI has designed two other interchange upgrades in the corridor, which serves western Salt Lake County.

Parsons

Chester Bridge Replacement

Teaming up with Ames Construction, Parsons will lead design work for replacing the 80-year-old two-lane continuous truss bridge spanning the Mississippi River between Perryville, Mo., and Chester, Ill. To be located upstream from the existing crossing, the new four-span, three-tower cable-stay structure will simplify construction and minimize risks to navigation traffic on the river. It will also double capacity for motorists. The $284-million design-build project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

After 80 years of service, the twin 6,000-ft-long steel truss structures connecting New London and Groton, Conn., on Interstate 95 are set to undergo an accelerated rehabilitation thanks to a $158.2-million federal infrastructure grant. The HNTB-designed upgrade will address steel deterioration and other factors that have forced northbound oversize and overweight vehicles to use a 12-mile detour around the Thames River crossing. The project will also expand safe access for cyclists and pedestrians.
