Prefabrication design and construction as well as a concentration on carbon neutrality and sustainability in educational projects are trending in the Washington, D.C., market, says Brault.

“Incorporating prefabricated elements into the design and build process can be both more efficient and more effective, as it also reduces onsite labor needs, which supports lower costs, a higher quality product and ultimately a safer jobsite,” he says.

Consigli is using prefabricated and panelized, light-gauge metal framing wall systems for residence halls at Coppin State University in Baltimore and two barracks buildings for all military branches at Fort Meade. But he adds that “it’s critical we build a more robust pipeline of diverse talent for the AEC industry” to tackle industrywide labor shortages.

“The market outlook in D.C. remains  strong with an influx of opportunities  in health care, education, hospitality, museums and cultural and government markets, including many large-scale, complex projects,” Brault says.
