I should start with a disclaimer: I model in Archicad 13; That is whenever I need to assess something quickly and am not constrained by other project-needs nor the limitations of the software itself. So, what I am about to write may no longer be an issue in Archicad 14, nor the other modelling packages people use.

This approach is somewhat surprising considering that in most contemporary construction contracts PDF’s as the digital representations of drawings have often higher standing than model files or even DWGs. It is being treated as something one puts up with until something better comes along.

Almost, I state – as the non-graphical data management is still somewhat outside its claws, i.e. project, people and time document management. On the lines of any BIM is better than CAD and any CAD is better than hand drawing? note: my daughter is going through one of those Uni courses). And how about the ‘old and wise’ ones?

In my experience, those AEC practitioners, that (for whatever reason) do decide to ‘suddenly’ get familiar with ‘a’ BIM originating software will always prefer the full software to a dumbed down viewer and will learn to use the ‘real’ thing as opposed to the somewhat idiot-proof substitute. In traditional documentation we would ‘say it once, and in the right place’, however with BIM, we want to ‘author it once, and in the right place, to be able to report it many times’ Figure 1: Appropriate location of information. The specification is part of the project BIM, and objects live in the specification.

We used to complain that CAD drawings looked horrible and now that concept has nearly been forgotten. Once the principals saw the data loss and loss of efficiency from such workarounds they got over the look of the documents. especially as documents became a secondary deliverable to the coordinated BIM. We decided that we also wanted to be able to sort the sheets in our project browser (and our drawing lists) by Submittal Package. and check the category Drawing Sheets. Drawing List. Leave the name Drawing List. The Drawing List on our coversheet shows ALL the drawings from ALL the different packages.
