Single-Family Permits Increase 19.2% Across the Country

The total number of issue single-family permits in January 2021 exceeded last year’s levels by 19.2%, for a total difference of 13,535 permits. These increases are dramatically difference than multifamily permits, with the exception of the West, which issued more multifamily permits than single-family in January.

Household Formation Outpaces Home Construction

Builders are facing supply chain and materials issues, but February’s winter weather greatly impacted the number of new-home starts as well. since January, new-home construction remains 8.2% higher than February 2020. Compared to 2020, sales were up in the Midwest and South, but down in the West and Northeast.
