There are good safety signs, bad safety signs and those that don’t tell you anything. An example of a “bad safety sign” is shown to the right. Notice the horrible placement and lack of context on the sign itself. PLAY AT YOUR OWN RISK” is an example of this type of sign. Below is my idea of a good safety sign.

Notice the horrible placement and lack of context on the sign itself. Historically, the foundation for “good safety signage” contains symbols with few or no words, with the words or symbols being placed so they make sense to a person seeing the sign for the first time. PLAY AT YOUR OWN RISK” is an example of this type of sign.

If you do not have a written procedure (safe operation, machine specific lockout, shutdown, etc.) I do not like standard safety signs and warnings because they typically mean little to the worker. It is my experience that the lead time for a new worker learning to run an automatic machine or operation can vary from 2 – 5 months.

Contained within OSHA regulation 1910.212 are the basic instructions for providing guarding on all machines. Guard machines where their operation exposes an employee to injury. Fasten the guards to machine when you can, and somewhere else when you can’t. Make sure the guard cannot cause its own hazards.
