One recent investment was made by the biopharmaceutical company Union Chimique Belge (UCB).

Led by the Research Foundation of the State University of New York (RF SUNY), the photonics institute involves a consortium of 124 partners, including 55 companies, across 20 states. The institute is funded in part by $110 million from the U.S. defense department, with an additional $500 million in state and private investment.
