The expanded Canal will permit super-sized Post-Panamax container vessels to travel directly to the East and Gulf Coasts of the U.S. The big ports of Virginia, Baltimore and Miami already are at that depth. for the first time. Savannah is deepening its harbor to 47 feet from 42 feet, and aims to complete the project in 2018.
