The fact, that Autodesk rules over the Global AEC is not new, it has been in the making for several decades. Almost, I state – as the non-graphical data management is still somewhat outside its claws, i.e. project, people and time document management. So, accepting to have a sole source toolset in my everyday work should be easy to do.

Being so bitter about Autodesk is to do a bit with my abstract being rejected by the Australian Revit Users’ Conference. And there is more: I’ve had numerous run-ins with Archicad and GS over the years too. OK, you’ve seen through me. VICO and I have a quiet truce and Gehry Technologies’ work I admire from a distance.

There is little point in undermining those personal relationships of mine and to reinforce my goodwill and intentions it I’ll admit to the Great Truth of BIM, again, and again – ‘Autodesk rules the BIM world. ArchiCAD is my tool of choice and I really enjoy how it handles PDF’s within its BIM models. Revit is the King of BIM!’.

Archicad and Tekla are old enough to know this. My everyday work IFC is working well but I'm using ArchiCAD and engineer is using Tekla Structure. The IFC translation user interface in Revit is poorly documented and poorly presented. With some care, I was able to export useable IFC files from ArchiCAD. My opinion.

In traditional documentation we would ‘say it once, and in the right place’, however with BIM, we want to ‘author it once, and in the right place, to be able to report it many times’ Figure 1: Appropriate location of information. The specification is part of the project BIM, and objects live in the specification.

We used to complain that CAD drawings looked horrible and now that concept has nearly been forgotten. Once the principals saw the data loss and loss of efficiency from such workarounds they got over the look of the documents. especially as documents became a secondary deliverable to the coordinated BIM. Autodesk Seek.

To add to the complexity, the as-built drawings we had on file were not accurate to the true construction of the existing structure because the original architect had improvised the design during construction. The model is not clean enough to develop construction documents so we have passed along that task to another architect.
