Should documentation that is based on a coordinated 3D digital model be charged at a higher price than straight CAD-ed one is? For example, an international consultancy I’ve been working with for a while now (7000+ people employed worldwide) likes to claim to be at the forefront of BIM application within its core services.

CAD drawings never become universally accepted contractual documents and the risk/liability issues of that ‘language’ are significantly less difficult than what making models ‘real’ would be. Maybe I should not be worried about the future of new generations, they’ll figure out how to claim their piece of the industry. Don’t worry.

I could imagine sheer horror on their faces recognizing that the current self-claimed ‘masters’ of the profession are by and large hands-off managers, conductors of orchestras, themselves unable to read the ‘music’ Poor gamblers of other parties’ money in an unregulated industry.

Their capacity to carry projects from day one of their employment, design or document buildings successfully has nothing to do with the willingness (or lack of) learning to sketch by hand. It confuses the software industry too, as they find themselves in the perplexing position of having to serve an industry split harshly across an age line.
