Recent employment reports show slight growth continuing in the fourth quarter. There have been modest gains in consumer spending, and retail sales have increased at about a 6 percent pace through the first ten months of the year. Boston, Richmond, Kansas City, and Dallas expressed optimism about the near-term outlook.

The EF-5 tornado destroyed or substantially damaged 531 employers in the city and put more than 5,200 jobs at risk. At this point, 88 percent of the employers affected by the tornado have reopened and over 95 percent of the jobs have been retained. Employment in Joplin is now at pre-recession levels.
