The long overdue third instalment of my ‘The role of PDFs in BIM’ trilogy Let me start with a long-winded explanation on, how this post is not supposed to be an argument based on the question of ‘why would one want to import one (or hundreds) of PDF file(s) into any working BIM model?’. Now, can I get on with exploring PDFs in BIM models?

I consider myself to be a model-based construction information practitioner (shortened to a ‘BIM- meddler’) rather than an ‘expert’ or even ‘specialist’ Tuesday, March 27, 2012. Archicad and Tekla are old enough to know this. With some care, I was able to export useable IFC files from ArchiCAD.

In traditional documentation we would ‘say it once, and in the right place’, however with BIM, we want to ‘author it once, and in the right place, to be able to report it many times’ Figure 1: Appropriate location of information. To avoid duplication, information should be both structured and coordinated. .

Regardless of its name (I know, the acronym has been only around since Autodesk had invented it) or what it means for people, there are reliable ways on measuring its effectiveness and ‘maturity’ in the current day BIM market.

We have one model that was started in Revit before we knew any of the limitations of Revit. The model is not clean enough to develop construction documents so we have passed along that task to another architect. Autodesk Seek. Autodesk University. ArchiCAD vs Revit. Autodesk Revit. Autodesk Seek.

Some food for thought: Could it (read that as "it will") be better to let the walls be modeled as they will be built (with dead spaces in between), rather than using in-place walls that simply mimic old methodologies, like CAD or Hand drawn lines filled with poche or hatching? It is more suited to a model that is about graphics.

you can draw a simple building and link in a simple building (by shared coordinates) and move these two icons around a bit (clipped and unclipped) to see how the two models react or. It's a bit of a pity that these things do not seem to be so wll documented in the helpfiles. Autodesk Seek. Autodesk University.
