After all, most construction contracts are still based on drawings and there is a belief that ‘we build off drawings’. Yet it is undisputable, that a large percentage of those drawings are created in a model-based software. And the majority of the stakeholders can only access this data via PDFs or printed off drawings.

When I started with ArchiCAD some 27 years ago, I did not think we’d grow old together. At the time, paid the price of half a new Audi car for the software/hardware package – come to think of it, it was about half of my annual salary. I am a manager of construction information, tools and people. Archicad at its best). You are either too young and take every modelling feature offered by whatever software as a given, or too old and don’t really care about the challenges people trying to smartly model construction elements still face. PDF as a digital file-format is generally frowned upon by those in charge of creation and management of project information within the AEC industry. Some sophisticated Cloud Document Management systems claim to have solved the issue by focusing on the even bigger issue with PDFs that is managing the quantities they tend to be coming in.

It started off with CAD, then, when BIM was getting strong enough to stay – it extended over almost anything to do with Construction Information Management. Almost, I state – as the non-graphical data management is still somewhat outside its claws, i.e. project, people and time document management.

Traditionally, a value that was represented on a drawing may not correctly corresponded with the value within the specification simply due to a ‘typo’ An example being where a ’60 minute fire door’ has been recorded on the drawing but has been recorded as ’90 minutes fire rating’ within the specification.

In my experience, those AEC practitioners, that (for whatever reason) do decide to ‘suddenly’ get familiar with ‘a’ BIM originating software will always prefer the full software to a dumbed down viewer and will learn to use the ‘real’ thing as opposed to the somewhat idiot-proof substitute.
