Dennis grew up in Marissa, Illinois, a small town of farmers and coal miners. Dennis decided to pursue architecture as his career, making the grades to enter the architecture school at the University of Illinois. A full-line, 10,000-square-foot department store in Madison, Illinois soon followed; the retailer carried on operating through the Depression. Yet, here they both are.
