On one hand, retail sales continue to show improvement from last year, yet the suburban shopping mall – or at least the traditional enclosed shopping mall – seems to be on the way out. Most retailers today want less space. And I know people don’t believe this, but the best Chicago contractors hate change orders.

One of the biggest challenges for commercial construction firms today is the tighter project timelines that have become the norm at every phase of a project – from shorter deadlines for submitting initial bids and budgets, to quicker resolution on addendums and change orders, to compressed schedules for construction and delivery.

Also, a lot retail construction projects are initiated in the summer to have everything complete by November 1, just in time for the holiday shopping season. If there is one aspect of a commercial construction job worth extra investment, it is the planning and drawing stage. Don’t skimp on architects. Chuck Taylor.

I’m sure the retailer was also surprised. If the client needed a hospital or condo building on top of the retail it would make sense, but 500 sq. Bottom line, use a commercial general contractor who specializes in what you need, whether its retail construction , restaurant construction, etc. Bring your GC in early.

We would send those drawings to a printer to copy enough sets to distribute to all the trade partners we were asking to bid the project – often 50 or 60 copies. This time and expense added up to a pretty significant investment.
