About a year ago GS rebranded its ArchiCAD, its logo turning from a somewhat curvy A to an arch with a point. I’d rather be known as an expert in a toolset that requires an additional clarification of ‘you know, used to be called ArchiCAD’ then just … ‘you know, ArchiCAD’. I badgered them about the ArchiCAD name, even then.

The fact, that Autodesk rules over the Global AEC is not new, it has been in the making for several decades. Autodesk (and its supporters) will argue, that their supremacy is well deserved, funded on industry-best products and support, but we all know this not to be true, and some of us will even admit to it.

See, once upon a time, some decade or so ago – BIM (or VC) and Graphisoft (with ArchiCAD) were doing very well in Australia (and New Zealand)! FKA was not the only cutting edge BIM company that pushed the boundaries of BIM using ArchiCAD in Australia in the early 2000s – Rice Dabney, Woods Bagot and others did too. Making progress.

Okay, I know they are trying… “they” being major “BIM” vendors such as Autodesk/Revit…and a far second Graphisoft/Archicad. But, are these folks a significant part of the reason why BIM isn’t taking hold? Why BIM is so misunderstood? ” – Really?

There is one organisation visibly missing from the list (as published so far) of corporate sponsors and it is, Autodesk. Autodesk has sewn up the HK market. Autodesk has sewn up the HK market. What is my problem with Autodesk? The global AEC too. Their foot soldiers are pretty agreeable people world-wide. Although, it is.

Autodesk has been ruling the roost for 3 decades. What about Archicad? Do you Mr Autodesk (and Mr Anycad) really expect that these kids will have the patience to learn programs that come with zillions of tutorials, strings of table-based commands and slow navigating? Hang on! - A major player since the eighties. Microstation?
