I should start with a disclaimer: I model in Archicad 13; That is whenever I need to assess something quickly and am not constrained by other project-needs nor the limitations of the software itself. So, what I am about to write may no longer be an issue in Archicad 14, nor the other modelling packages people use.

I documented full houses in 3D ArchiCAD 20 years ago in our design studio, while she looked after our children. I designed and modelled iconic commercial buildings in Teamwork Architecture when we moved to a bigger town 15 years ago. I built a business based on super-clever construction modelling some 12 years ago.

That said, BIM has been preoccupied with 3D visualization to the extent that many/most feel that Revit, Archicad, et al are all that’s needed to implement BIM. Despite the above there remains surprisingly little collaboration within the AECOO sector(s) (Architecture, Engineering, Construction, Operations, Owner).

In traditional documentation we would ‘say it once, and in the right place’, however with BIM, we want to ‘author it once, and in the right place, to be able to report it many times’ Figure 1: Appropriate location of information. The specification is part of the project BIM, and objects live in the specification.

Ive been teaching our office how to use Revit Architecture. We currently have 4 Revit projects under construction, but not all of our projects made it through the CD phase. The model is not clean enough to develop construction documents so we have passed along that task to another architect. ArchiCAD vs Revit.

Ive been teaching our office how to use Revit Architecture. Ive been doing construction documents in Revit for the past three years and dont have any renderings to show from that time. The only other images I have are photos of projects completed or under construction. Is this a remodel or new construction project?
