I’m onto some rose-coloured BIM issues…and here is a tip for ArchiCAD users as a bonus

DebunkTheBIM

So let’s talk BIM, the rosy, and pink, and lemon-yellow and forest-green… For a long time I’ve been a strong advocate of proactively using colours in construction information management, often provoking condescending comments from ‘architects that wear only black’. Model based communication supports this idea splendidly.

Please don’t clean up my wall intersections.

I should start with a disclaimer: I model in Archicad 13; That is whenever I need to assess something quickly and am not constrained by other project-needs nor the limitations of the software itself. So, what I am about to write may no longer be an issue in Archicad 14, nor the other modelling packages people use.

Keeping your PDF’s in check – an absolute necessity for successful BIM-ming on any scale

DebunkTheBIM

Through my work I build BIM models from other people’s designs, either during the official design process, following it as part of preparing construction tenders, parallel to building the real thing or even post construction for settling residual claims between parties. ArchiCAD imports PDF’s as Drawings (as opposed to images) 2.

Construction is run like a corner store!

Mentioned Autodesk yesterday, Archicad, Microstation, Vectorworks, etc. I will come back to the battles that these products fought (and keep fighting) with each other in the building design/documenting landscape, later. You raise this issue, and the answer is often: ‘construction is not retail, the same rules do not apply!’

PDFs and BIM: A trilogy of posts investigating what the PDF format’s role may be in strategies transitioning the industry to BIM? First part: PDFs within current AEC – Important yet neglected?

This approach is somewhat surprising considering that in most contemporary construction contracts PDF’s as the digital representations of drawings have often higher standing than model files or even DWGs. It is being treated as something one puts up with until something better comes along.

Same, same but different – My mother is not getting paperfreeconstruction, the concept.

I documented full houses in 3D ArchiCAD 20 years ago in our design studio, while she looked after our children. I built a business based on super-clever construction modelling some 12 years ago. I ‘drew’ the first axo chair in AutoCAD 25 years ago and showed it to her. I taught how to BIM globally 10 years ago.

I’ll be in Novi Sad next week.

A dear old acquaintance has scheduled the annually occurring Archicad users’ summit for the same weekend. The last time I presented at this event it was exactly 5 years ago and I chose the subject of ‘virtual construction’. We were in the process of fully documenting it in 3D. He kindly invited me to present.
