An Ode to ArchiCAD…or…can we call it something else?

DebunkTheBIM

Not even 30 years ago when I first started associating with it, even though at the time both the Arch part and the CAD part were positive terms. About a year ago GS rebranded its ArchiCAD, its logo turning from a somewhat curvy A to an arch with a point. ArchiCAD just sounds like a snobbier (or more obscure) version of AutoCAD.

Betting on a CAD horse in the nineteen-nineties. (1995)

DebunkTheBIM

Choosing a CAD software-package in the nineties was a lot of fun. If you bought ArchiCAD you (supposedly) worked more in 3D, were extremely slow in cadding and had no programming skills. One spent all money and energy on retaining monopolistic dealerships, the other cultivated CAD managers as their champions.

2D CAD sucks

Do

I really truly beleive that moving to a non object based Computer Tool like 2D CAD was one of the worst things our industry ever did. We should've stuck with pen & paper until a tool like Revit or Archicad or Tri-Forma came along. With 2D CAD we got the notion of "oh its easy to change".

Another example why it is better to stay out of BIM surveys…

DebunkTheBIM

First thing, first: “The survey asked a series of questions to establish current usage of both 2D and 3D CAD, as a precursor to determining likely future engagement with Building Information Modelling (BIM).” … actually, this was the question: “When producing CAD drawings, which of the following tools do you mainly use?”

Vectorworks and ArchiCAD

CAD Shack

Yesterday Nemetschek (makers of Vetorworks) announced plans to aquire Graphicsoft (makers of ArchiCAD). I guess I could say more than I think Archiworks sounds better than VectorCAD. They are both strong programs with good followings and I believe getting together now is a smart move for both.

PDFs and BIM: A trilogy of posts investigating what the PDF format’s role may be in strategies transitioning the industry to BIM? First part: PDFs within current AEC – Important yet neglected?

DebunkTheBIM

In the still widely practised 2D information flow, where simultaneously PDF/DWG files get exchanged by project participants, the PDF’s do get used by those not CAD literate, but all further work on coordinating or assessing the data (for example creating a BOQ) is usually done on the DWG files.
