An Ode to ArchiCAD…or…can we call it something else?

DebunkTheBIM

Not even 30 years ago when I first started associating with it, even though at the time both the Arch part and the CAD part were positive terms. About a year ago GS rebranded its ArchiCAD, its logo turning from a somewhat curvy A to an arch with a point. ArchiCAD just sounds like a snobbier (or more obscure) version of AutoCAD.

The chicken and the egg.Are software developers supposed to lead an industry or just serve it?

DebunkTheBIM

I observed a phenomena: over the years the number of users of 3D (model) based software in AEC has raised dramatically while their average skill level dropped tragically. Archicad did it for an entire decade through the nineties; Presently, both packages and many more are all plodding along route 2.

Another example why it is better to stay out of BIM surveys…

….Unless of course you have software to sell. It provides a credible picture of present day attitudes and progress made towards Building Information Modelling (BIM) in New Zealand.” Autodesk products are conveniently bundled together – not so ArchiCAD and Vectorworks (owned by the same company: Nemetschek).

PDFs and BIM: A trilogy of posts investigating what the PDF format’s role may be in strategies transitioning the industry to BIM? First part: PDFs within current AEC – Important yet neglected?

DebunkTheBIM

This approach is somewhat surprising considering that in most contemporary construction contracts PDF’s as the digital representations of drawings have often higher standing than model files or even DWGs. These can be placed in plans/elevations/sections making them an excellent base for either 2D or 3D based work.

Isn’t someone missing here? (What is my problem with Autodesk?)

DebunkTheBIM

I get regular updates through my FB page on how the big event of The Hong Kong Institute of Building Information Modelling (HKIBIM) planned for the 13 th of December is shaping up. In the end, they are ‘just’ a software provider, successful at what they are doing, why can’t I just let them be. Autodesk has sewn up the HK market.

Today’s Global BIM is in worse shape than the one we started off 20 years ago (Note to myself: Brace for hate-mail)

DebunkTheBIM

For example, while almost everyone publicly agrees that no-one software (not even Revit) equals BIM – all sorts of other descriptions are likely to float around, from simple ‘one word’ depiction to highly complicated bullet-pointed explanations. CAD managers taunted us for file sizes and line types and fonts and RAM. I did, anyway.
