About a year ago GS rebranded its ArchiCAD, its logo turning from a somewhat curvy A to an arch with a point. I’d rather be known as an expert in a toolset that requires an additional clarification of ‘you know, used to be called ArchiCAD’ then just … ‘you know, ArchiCAD’. I badgered them about the ArchiCAD name, even then.

This fact brought home the realisation, that it is exactly 20 years since I bought my first ArchiCAD licence. Main, modelling tool must be ArchiCAD; Revit is a dog, and if you are not going for Revit for political reasons, might as well go with the best tool still on the market. Again, you must use ArchiCAD.

Cadimage, the NZ Archicad-tool-developer is wisely catering for all tastes in their Doorbuilder. Go into any architectural consultancy employing people from different parts of the world and soon you’ll find two of them arguing about the way hinging of doors must be represented on drawings. and indicate the opening of the door. see picture).

Mentioned Autodesk yesterday, Archicad, Microstation, Vectorworks, etc. I will come back to the battles that these products fought (and keep fighting) with each other in the building design/documenting landscape, later.

I knew I couldn't convince my employer to dig in at the time. Consider that Archicad would love it if we all woke up tomorrow and gave them credit for doing it all years earlier. You either believe intuitively that it is the right thing to do or you don't. For me it was emotional first. I downloaded Revit 1.0 I don't even care.

That could be changed with a 4-step process: Make the project truly paper free, make Caterpillar phones the official phones of the project, put Adobe into charge of all the data outputs (2D, 3D, 4D…) and link everything to a central model built by and on ArchiCAD. 10%, 20%, 90%? The emphasis is on the ‘real’.
