The chicken and the egg.Are software developers supposed to lead an industry or just serve it?

DebunkTheBIM

I observed a phenomena: over the years the number of users of 3D (model) based software in AEC has raised dramatically while their average skill level dropped tragically. Archicad did it for an entire decade through the nineties; Presently, both packages and many more are all plodding along route 2. And project managers turned up too.

Forget “BIM”, and Get on Board with BLM – Building / Built Environment Life-cycle Management

Building Information Management

BIM is the life-cycle management of the built environment supported by digital technology. That said, BIM has been preoccupied with 3D visualization to the extent that many/most feel that Revit, Archicad, et al are all that’s needed to implement BIM.

The Focus of BIM Education: A Time for Change

Building Information Management

Using Revit, Archicad, or other 3d modeling software is NOT an introduction to BIM, but rather a component of BIM. Owners, Contractors, Subcontractors, AEs, Building Product Manufactures, Oversight Groups and/or any stakeholder of the built environment will need to undergo fundamental process change in order to succeed at BIM.

BIM – FACT or FICTION?

Building Information Management

BIM is the life-cycle management of the built environment supported by digital technology. Does it exist today? BIM require s the integration of previously d ispara te compet enci es, processes, and technologies. rob ust ontolog y, metrics, and be nchmarks are arguably ALL requirements for ini tial and ongoing suc cess.

Globalize BIM! (genuinely)

DebunkTheBIM

I go on-and-on about the interrelation between how various software dealers organise their product distribution and the overall state of BIM within AEC. So sticking to this type of environment should not by itself be paralyzing for the industry. They navigate by-the ‘us’ and ‘them’.

BIM Viewers in the Cloud vs. PDF Spatial Re-constructors on Earth (Part 2 of the overdue PDF trilogy I promised some time ago)

DebunkTheBIM

In my experience, those AEC practitioners, that (for whatever reason) do decide to ‘suddenly’ get familiar with ‘a’ BIM originating software will always prefer the full software to a dumbed down viewer and will learn to use the ‘real’ thing as opposed to the somewhat idiot-proof substitute. For example, PDF Spatial Re-constructors.

PDFs and BIM: A trilogy of posts investigating what the PDF format’s role may be in strategies transitioning the industry to BIM? First part: PDFs within current AEC – Important yet neglected?

DebunkTheBIM

The technical people that are in need of using PDF’s within their CAD environments tend to turn them into DXFs (often ending up with zillions of fuzzy sub-elements), JPEGS or to lay them under their digital drawings. These can be placed in plans/elevations/sections making them an excellent base for either 2D or 3D based work.
