DebunkTheBIM: Now, these are nice! (Archicad at its best)

DebunkTheBIM

I am a manager of construction information, tools and people. I believe that hands-on manipulating of project information by all project participants is the key to achieving any meaningful improvement of the AEC industry operating within the post-gambling-era. Archicad at its best). Archicad at its best). DebunkTheBIM.

Same, same but different – My mother is not getting paperfreeconstruction, the concept.

DebunkTheBIM

Launching the ‘paperfree’ movement, I managed to unsettle her. Almost thirty years ago, I was first talking about computer modelling of buildings. I documented full houses in 3D ArchiCAD 20 years ago in our design studio, while she looked after our children. Sort them, check against models? She is confused. Or a tablet.

The chicken and the egg.Are software developers supposed to lead an industry or just serve it?

DebunkTheBIM

I observed a phenomena: over the years the number of users of 3D (model) based software in AEC has raised dramatically while their average skill level dropped tragically. Clients generally became less aware of the real-realities of the industry. And project managers turned up too.

PDFs and BIM: A trilogy of posts investigating what the PDF format’s role may be in strategies transitioning the industry to BIM? First part: PDFs within current AEC – Important yet neglected?

DebunkTheBIM

PDF as a digital file-format is generally frowned upon by those in charge of creation and management of project information within the AEC industry. This is a very valid point as the quantities drawings and consequently PDFs are produced at are totally out of synch with what is reasonable or manageable.

Today’s Global BIM is in worse shape than the one we started off 20 years ago (Note to myself: Brace for hate-mail)

DebunkTheBIM

Worse even from that fact, it did little to improve the processes (don’t believe me, go to weekly meetings of medium to large projects), it had done almost nothing to increase accountability and decrease corrupt practices that plague the industry. CAD managers taunted us for file sizes and line types and fonts and RAM. I did, anyway.

The Constructor that was not meant to be.

DebunkTheBIM

When VICO picked up Constructor about 5 years ago, it elected to upscale the reasonably capable but also architect biased modelling software into a complicated construction suite. Get rid of the architectural baggage Archicad was weighed down with, and make Constructor a stand alone, construction focused, modelling package.
