BIM for Seniors

DebunkTheBIM

Yet it is a language that only a small percentage of the industry speaks. Now, many in the industry will be quick to dispute the first claim. Yet it is undisputable, that a large percentage of those drawings are created in a model-based software. Or are happy to pass it onto the BIM doers, modellers, coordinators, and managers.

Happy 40th Graphisoft!

When I started with ArchiCAD some 27 years ago, I did not think we’d grow old together. At the time, paid the price of half a new Audi car for the software/hardware package – come to think of it, it was about half of my annual salary. Or at least it is trying to be seen as an ‘industry citizen’ rather than just an architect’s folly.

DebunkTheBIM: Now, these are nice! (Archicad at its best)

DebunkTheBIM

I am a manager of construction information, tools and people. I believe that hands-on manipulating of project information by all project participants is the key to achieving any meaningful improvement of the AEC industry operating within the post-gambling-era. The chicken and the egg.Are software developers supposed to lead an industry or just serve it?

DebunkTheBIM

I observed a phenomena: over the years the number of users of 3D (model) based software in AEC has raised dramatically while their average skill level dropped tragically. Clients generally became less aware of the real-realities of the industry. Clients generally became less aware of the real-realities of the industry.

Here is why Autodesk’s monopoly over the Global AEC is not good, not even for Autodesk:

It started off with CAD, then, when BIM was getting strong enough to stay – it extended over almost anything to do with Construction Information Management. Almost, I state – as the non-graphical data management is still somewhat outside its claws, i.e. project, people and time document management.

PDFs and BIM: A trilogy of posts investigating what the PDF format’s role may be in strategies transitioning the industry to BIM? First part: PDFs within current AEC – Important yet neglected?

DebunkTheBIM

PDF as a digital file-format is generally frowned upon by those in charge of creation and management of project information within the AEC industry. This is a very valid point as the quantities drawings and consequently PDFs are produced at are totally out of synch with what is reasonable or manageable.

Today’s Global BIM is in worse shape than the one we started off 20 years ago (Note to myself: Brace for hate-mail)

DebunkTheBIM

For example, while almost everyone publicly agrees that no-one software (not even Revit) equals BIM – all sorts of other descriptions are likely to float around, from simple ‘one word’ depiction to highly complicated bullet-pointed explanations. CAD managers taunted us for file sizes and line types and fonts and RAM. I did, anyway.
