Fluency is probably below 1% of all the people that work in the AEC industry and deal with its information day in and out. The new generation of 20 somethings (and younger) in training or about to enter the AEC, are taught that documenting building is about creating drawings. A language that its host industry does not speak.

A month or so ago I received an email from a friend asking about dealing with revision numbering in Revit. Let''s not kid ourselves, it really does cost money to "do" things, especially things that a given (Revit) software doesn''t support. I'm writing about both the process and the software. Obviously there is some reluctance to review drawings on screen, on the computer. I've encountered drawings coming off the plotter only to see some obvious typo or other problem that we clearly missed on screen for days, weeks or even months. This is the PC version's icon.

In a sense, because BIM contains more information that is structured more efficiently than traditional product like CAD files, spreadsheets and drawings. Some have concerns that if they provide their work in an editable format (whether BIM or CAD) some-one will make changes to their work without their knowledge and/or permission.

Which was then followed by "Oh gosh, you mean it doesn''t do "X" just like {insert your software here}? Such as, "We''ve got all these people who are {insert your software here} experts. The software doesn''t change to suit us.
