I said it before, and not just once: repackage your product, call it an ‘all encompassing, constructing BIM tool’ and you’ll do more good to the industry than any type of new tool development. My dear, beloved, ArchiCAD and Graphisoft. Please wake up! Promoting a stair as the central innovation for this year, really?

Okay, I know they are trying… “they” being major “BIM” vendors such as Autodesk/Revit…and a far second Graphisoft/Archicad. But, are these folks a significant part of the reason why BIM isn’t taking hold? Why BIM is so misunderstood? BIM is just about design?

Let me just mention a few basic points that come to mind: · For example the work of prof Mark Burry: he moved to Melbourne in the mid 1990s – by then a visible and globally respected BIM figure. See, once upon a time, some decade or so ago – BIM (or VC) and Graphisoft (with ArchiCAD) were doing very well in Australia (and New Zealand)!

Global uptake of BIM will rise, companies will see the opportunity to clean up their operations under this ‘rebirthing’ and work smarter. One thing is almost certain, there will continue to be some need for building/construction for whoever survives. For the AEC.

The long overdue third instalment of my ‘The role of PDFs in BIM’ trilogy Let me start with a long-winded explanation on, how this post is not supposed to be an argument based on the question of ‘why would one want to import one (or hundreds) of PDF file(s) into any working BIM model?’. Revit is the King of BIM!’.

On the other hand, the ‘cat & mouse game’ that rules my work-life these days must be a bit tedious to endure by those that come here to read on ‘pure’ BIM topics. Having recently stepped onto one-too-many toe – I’ve been warned to tone my blog down a bit… I’m not in a huge hurry to oblige; it would cramp my style a lot.

First, let me introduce you to the term of ‘a dystopian BIM practitioner’. True, over many years now, I have been cementing my image in the field, as being forever negative about BIM and its immediate prospects to grow, help productivity, cooperation and innovation. Maybe, I hurt too many of well-meaning, little BIM ants.

BIM objects are much more than just graphical representations. All BIM objects have properties, and most also have geometries (although some do not, for example a paint finish). The specification is part of the project BIM, and objects live in the specification. ‘A new generation of specifiers is being empowered by BIM.

Today, I take a break from the big questions of the BIM philosophy as I wish to point out some nice features that I like in two different modelling packages (see pictures attached): DWG vector files when imported to Revit show up in 3D as visible lines, circles, hatches.
