Is Two D from Two D still cheaper than Two D from Three D?

DebunkTheBIM

Should documentation that is based on a coordinated 3D digital model be charged at a higher price than straight CAD-ed one is? For example, an international consultancy I’ve been working with for a while now (7000+ people employed worldwide) likes to claim to be at the forefront of BIM application within its core services.

#117:  Building Information Modeling

NH Construction Law

This is not your father’s CAD system. Whether a BIM model is considered a Contract Document required to be followed is a matter for agreement among the project participants. Adjustments made in the field to accommodate those differences can spawn what look very much like Type I differing site condition claims.

PDFs and BIM: A trilogy of posts investigating what the PDF format’s role may be in strategies transitioning the industry to BIM? First part: PDFs within current AEC – Important yet neglected?

DebunkTheBIM

In the still widely practised 2D information flow, where simultaneously PDF/DWG files get exchanged by project participants, the PDF’s do get used by those not CAD literate, but all further work on coordinating or assessing the data (for example creating a BOQ) is usually done on the DWG files.

BIM is dead, please do not resuscitate!

DebunkTheBIM

The new generation of 20 somethings (and younger) in training or about to enter the AEC, are taught that documenting building is about creating drawings. Maybe I should not be worried about the future of new generations, they’ll figure out how to claim their piece of the industry. Provide CAD files of their installation details?

Do we need to work on larger desks or expand our minds?

DebunkTheBIM

I talked previously about the irony of CAD managers (preventing ‘Flatcad grow up and move on’) being put in charge to herald in the ‘new’ (BIM) approach; There is another paradox the industry can claim: Buildings get documented by building documenters. I’ll tell you about A3 based ‘picture book documenting’ tomorrow.

AEC Architects/Engineers: What IS your MRT?

DebunkTheBIM

There are traditional, contract-regulated response-requirements set for many actions needed to be performed by various AEC-project participants (comments, approvals, claims, RFIs etc.) – yet no form of an MRT comes up ever as something architects would boast about. What about the AEC?

The case for architects with no hands – or why can’t the young of the AEC industry be successful without wanting to hand-sketch?

DebunkTheBIM

I got hooked very early on the idea of using the power of computers to assist the profession in design, documentation and construction management. While the documentation part converted to its electronic equivalent ‘relatively’ painlessly, the idea of designing with no free hand sketching and paper involved, was an absolute no-no for most.
