#117:  Building Information Modeling

NH Construction Law

Over the past decade, Building Information Modeling (“BIM”) – computerized 3D portrayal of integrated building elements that allows a project or project subset to be built virtually before being built in the field – has become prolific in commercial construction. This is not your father’s CAD system.

BIM is dead, please do not resuscitate!

DebunkTheBIM

The new generation of 20 somethings (and younger) in training or about to enter the AEC, are taught that documenting building is about creating drawings. Or even if such programs exist and students are let loose to model, render and animate to their heart content, once they enter the industry, they get quickly shown the ‘real’ ropes.

Is Two D from Two D still cheaper than Two D from Three D?

DebunkTheBIM

Should documentation that is based on a coordinated 3D digital model be charged at a higher price than straight CAD-ed one is? For example, an international consultancy I’ve been working with for a while now (7000+ people employed worldwide) likes to claim to be at the forefront of BIM application within its core services.

PDFs and BIM: A trilogy of posts investigating what the PDF format’s role may be in strategies transitioning the industry to BIM? First part: PDFs within current AEC – Important yet neglected?

DebunkTheBIM

AEC Architects/Engineers: What IS your MRT?

DebunkTheBIM

There are traditional, contract-regulated response-requirements set for many actions needed to be performed by various AEC-project participants (comments, approvals, claims, RFIs etc.) – yet no form of an MRT comes up ever as something architects would boast about. What about the AEC?

BIM IP

Building Information Management

For some reason BIM authors (architects, engineers, etc) think that because they create the initial BIM information they have the right to full control and to charge for the BIM model throughout the life of the building. The architect doesn’t model ductwork, they use the mechanical engineer’s model.

I consider myself to be a model-based construction information practitioner (shortened to a ‘BIM- meddler’) rather than an ‘expert’ or even ‘specialist’ Saturday, June 2, 2012.
