#117:  Building Information Modeling

NH Construction Law

Over the past decade, Building Information Modeling (“BIM”) – computerized 3D portrayal of integrated building elements that allows a project or project subset to be built virtually before being built in the field – has become prolific in commercial construction. This is not your father’s CAD system.

Is Two D from Two D still cheaper than Two D from Three D?

DebunkTheBIM

Should documentation that is based on a coordinated 3D digital model be charged at a higher price than straight CAD-ed one is? For example, an international consultancy I’ve been working with for a while now (7000+ people employed worldwide) likes to claim to be at the forefront of BIM application within its core services.

BIM is dead, please do not resuscitate!

Or even if such programs exist and students are let loose to model, render and animate to their heart content, once they enter the industry, they get quickly shown the ‘real’ ropes. A good modeller will have plenty of opportunities to model, but rule number one is, that the ‘drawings’ are priority, what consultancies get paid for.

PDFs and BIM: A trilogy of posts investigating what the PDF format’s role may be in strategies transitioning the industry to BIM? First part: PDFs within current AEC – Important yet neglected?

DebunkTheBIM

This approach is somewhat surprising considering that in most contemporary construction contracts PDF’s as the digital representations of drawings have often higher standing than model files or even DWGs. Could the problem be in lack of interest from Adobe to step up its offering for the AEC or are there some other reasons behind the scenes?

AEC Architects/Engineers: What IS your MRT?

DebunkTheBIM

There are traditional, contract-regulated response-requirements set for many actions needed to be performed by various AEC-project participants (comments, approvals, claims, RFIs etc.) – yet no form of an MRT comes up ever as something architects would boast about. What about the AEC?

The sixth category: BIM as a parasite

DebunkTheBIM

Flatcad was first called CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Drafting and Manufacture) then it lost the CAM when Architecture started to claim ownership, but added another D for Design. Then there is the acronym. You can hardly be a good BIMmer without having your own twist on the acronym. CADD); BIM was not always BIM either.

Playing with fire – the high risk of forcing uncontrolled BIM to vital infrastructural and other important assets

DebunkTheBIM

According to the shiny suits, BIM is not only supposed to save a lot of money on these undertakings (remember: clash detection) but also bring ALL sub-contractors to create a singing dancing (anything up to 7D) coordinated digital model.
