Enabling meaningful access to model data outside of native CAD platforms has been neglected by software developers and data originators for a long time. Why are grids, north points, levels, spaces and zones almost never shown in 3D? Design intent, future operational references, construction approach visualised on the model?

First thing you have to do is open the door (or other) family and add a reference plane (as shown below). Now select that reference plane and make sure that under its properties you change the Wall Closure parameter to TRUE. You can also add a second reference plane to control exterior and interior wall layer wrapping separately.

The last trick is, when you go to place the elevation, you choose "Reference other view" in the Options bar. From Reference other View you can choose either drafting views (good for site/existing condition photos) or any view saved as a "rendering" (image) in the project. Revit Zone. Some people refer to these individuals as Data Managers or Data Leaders. HOKs CAD Standards describe a Data Leader as someone "responsible for the execution of the CAD strategy including, the use of BIM, the folder structure and file-naming strategy, use of templates, and documenting specific project procedures." In the options bar youll notice that you can "Reference other view" (for referencing a drafting view that is already present). Just draw a reference plane at the angle you want (and in the location you want for your section line) then place your section line adjacent to the reference plane. National CAD Standards.
