Social Media: Do We Really Need-i-ya?

Constructonomics

Facebook, Twitter, podcasts, friends, followers, this thing, that thing, does it ever stop? Honestly, this is just getting way out of hand. There’s movies about it, talk shows, lawsuits, privacy concerns, what next? I shudder at the thought. . *Before we go any further I feel like I need to clear the air and just make clear that Mark Zuckerberg did not come anywhere close to inventing social networking and yes, he did steal the idea for Facebook from those twins at Harvard.

Commercial Construction CSI – How to Uncover the Demons in Your Construction Site

HardHatChat

KA-BOOM! We were pulling a feeder cable through a Chicago retail construction project when we heard the explosion. Then, the transformer blew out. What the heck happened? It was a case for the Englewood Construction CSI team. Step 1: We pulled out the cable to find it completely destroyed. Step 2: We rented a sewer camera and discovered a metal object stuck to the existing pipe, which scraped the cable and caused the explosion.

Another item that came from attending BIMForum Winter 2011 , Tekla BIMsight. I admit that my first reaction to hearing the name was, "Oh, a cloud sharing/viewing solution?" Then I saw the spelling of the name. Using price alone, if we compare Autodesk's Navisworks Manage and Tekla BIMsight: Navisworks Manage: $10k-ish (USD) $1.5k yearly subscription Tekla BIMsight: $0.0k (USD) aka FREE (no subscription) Okay, if BIMsight doesn't do everything that Navisworks does how fair is that?

Building Teams First – Buildings Next

Constructonomics

Team building is one of those touchy feely ideas that usually gets placed on the priority list alongside dentist office visits and polar bear swimming competitions. This is probably because everyone feels that there are so many more important things to do on a construction project than have some team building event when everyone could be spending their time thinking of ways to suck more money out of their opponent.

‘Don’t link your (BIM related) arguments to software packages, they weaken them’

DebunkTheBIM

‘Don’t link your arguments to software packages, they weaken them’ – warn me people responding to my posts (they mean the arguments, not the packages, I guess); While a software-neutral position may be more comfortable to comment from, I am not keen to go there for two reasons: 1/ Very few BIM experts out there are truly unbiased to software, even those that are in academia and remote from practice often wear ‘software tinted glasses’.

Trawl through the web for ‘benefits of BIM modelling’ and you’ll find truckloads of potential gains that various parties will enjoy if they went down the BIM route and forked out additional funds to support this new ‘thing’.

A pre-BIM task: Get (back) into the habit of using a Light (box) table!

DebunkTheBIM

The best way to get into BIM (even if you’ve never tried it) is by picking a real construction project. You don’t have to be on site, not even associated to a contractor to have a role with tasks closely related to the progress of a construction project. You will be assessing drawings (plans) daily. In the near future, I plan to write about ways to set up a construction-based BIM project.
