Green Home Design Reduces Carbon Footprint

Green Home Design Architect

A green home minimizes the negative impact on its environment through its home design. Here are a few considerations your architect takes into account when designing a green home: 1. Site: Evaluations and analysis of access, slope, ledge, soil, bodies of water, and vegetation in order to limit the home’s impact on the site environment. This includes the site location (farmland, wetland, protected species habitats) and proximity to public transportation, parks, schools, and stores. 2.

Many door and room tags in the architect's Revit file are just really large and dark when they are linked into your Revit MEP project. They can also mask out MEP content like lights and diffusers. We can bring them down a notch by editing these families in the linked architects project file. Here's how you do it. Open the Architects project file, find an offending tag and select it.

Thoughts on the stimulus package?

PSMJ Resources

As most of you know, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the $819 billion economic stimulus package last night. The bill now goes to the U.S. Senate, where passage is expected sometime next week. However, because the two bills will be somewhat different, they will need to be ironed out in a conference committee into a version that will then need passage again from the Senate and the House before making their way to President Barack Obama's desk.

Benefits of Building a Green Home

Green Home Design Architect

Why build a green home? Every positive action counts. Many people assume that if you are going to build a green home , you’ll be spending far more money than a regular home. This is not true. From my vantage point, any improvement to any portion of the home building process helps the environment. According to the Brookings Institution, by the year 2030 there will be 34 million new housing units constructed and 23 million existing units will be replaced.

Selecting the Un-selectable

CAD Shack

Yesterday I had a viewport that I could not select in AutoCAD MEP. It just couldn't be picked even with a crossing window. I really didn't know if it was a viewport. To get at it I issued the moved command and typed "all" at the command line effectively selecting every object in the drawing. Then holding down the shift key I unselected everything with a giant crossing window, leaving the un-selectable object still in the selection set.

Let Me Tell You A Story

'Ahh, the nostalgia of car trips. Took one this summer with the whole family, written about in these pages and was only KIDDING about trying to drive and swat my children simultaneously. I actually stopped the car. Anyway.… Just got back from taking my son to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. It’s a 5 ½ hour drive there, even with 515 horsepower from my grossly “un-green” car that may cause Global Warming all by itself.

Interesting Associated Press article that came out yesterday about the $825 billion economic stimulus package. In the article, which runs in a question-and-answer format, Mark Zandi , chief economist at Moody's Economy.com, says the stimulus package will reduce the number of jobs lost in the next two years, not stop workers from losing jobs. Without the package, however, roughly 8 million jobs will be lost by the end of 2010, pushing the unemployment rate to more than 11 percent.

Don't let desperation fuel a bad job choice

PSMJ Resources

The sad truth is that many A/E firms - even profitable ones - are laying off staff. For most of us, losing our job is a personally demoralizing and disempowering event - even if the reasons we have been let go are completely unrelated to our job performance or work habits. As our period of unemployment lengthens from weeks to months, our notions about what is a good job fit may become more relaxed as a sense of quiet desperation may set in.

Sustainable, Energy Efficient, and Green - What's the difference?

Green Home Design Architect

One of our frequently asked questions is the difference between sustainable, green, and energy efficient. “Energy efficient” may specifically refer to the home’s energy consumption. A home’s energy usage is primarily heating and cooling. Appliances tend to be the second largest draw now that incandescent lighting is giving way to compact fluorescents, LEDs and other lighting options.
