Archie is the cheap version of Archicad, customised for Contractors. Archie’s workspace is partitioned into 4 panels, each colour coded for easy navigation: Modelling and Coordination: the panel is white with the original-orange coloured grid of ArchiCAD (note spell!) where contractors model their buildings. Unfortunate but true.

This fact brought home the realisation, that it is exactly 20 years since I bought my first ArchiCAD licence. Main, modelling tool must be ArchiCAD; Revit is a dog, and if you are not going for Revit for political reasons, might as well go with the best tool still on the market. Again, you must use ArchiCAD.

Mentioned Autodesk yesterday, Archicad, Microstation, Vectorworks, etc. There is one party that has by now become a major ‘collateral damage’ to these battles – the entire construction industry, left to ‘lumber on’ using devices from the middle ages. This approach is somewhat surprising considering that in most contemporary construction contracts PDF’s as the digital representations of drawings have often higher standing than model files or even DWGs. It is being treated as something one puts up with until something better comes along.

When VICO picked up Constructor about 5 years ago, it elected to upscale the reasonably capable but also architect biased modelling software into a complicated construction suite. Get rid of the architectural baggage Archicad was weighed down with, and make Constructor a stand alone, construction focused, modelling package.

Archicad has a little gadget within the Trace & Reference command that will allow you to split the screen and slide either up/down or sidewise. Neither could be called an absolute must but oh, so useful when one models at the construction end. Or are there? What is good for the goose should work for the gander?

I ‘drew’ the first axo chair in AutoCAD 25 years ago and showed it to her. I taught how to BIM globally 10 years ago.

Skeptics will say, that was no BIM, just 3D, but the fact is that I used 3D for documenting full buildings from the first day I learned ArchiCAD (4.5), applied appropriate materials (meta data!) – and jumped on the first opportunity of doing 4D models when I came across, the then extremely buggy and highly temperamental Construction Simulation.
