The answers can be determined but only after documented due diligence using Task Based Risk Assessment (past blogs) and assessing feasibility of hazard controls. The method of determining practicability is found in ANSI B11.0 – 2015, the foundation standard for the family of ANSI B11 General Industry Safety Standards.

What’s often missed and not understood is the in-between, where tasks are not minor servicing but LOTO is not feasible. In situations where LOTO is not feasible, an ALTERNATIVE METHOD is needed. Without a documented procedure, a serious injury is waiting to occur. Why wait for an OSHA inspection to occur before taking action?

A new series of ANSI standards is now available to assist employers in assessing how to comply with OSHA standards, determine feasible safeguards or harmonize with ISO and U.S. was created in 2010 as a foundational standard for the safety of machinery. If externally prestressed tendons are used it should be feasible to complete three spans per week. With this method a crane or self launching gantry system can place upto six segments per day. The rate of construction for internally prestressed segments is considered to be a span per week.
