I read a post today that offers one solution using a View List, a schedule of views. All the stock Revit templates include a browser configuration called "not on sheets". If my role is documentation I can focus on the sheets part of the browser. Something like PLAN - OVERALL - FLOOR SIX sure looks more formal than Level 06.

The structural "layer" of a floor may actually be modeled by the structural consultant, assuming the structural engineer we are working with uses Revit and isn''t working directly in the same model with us (architecture bias in this post). You can schedule the railing and provide a similar tagging approach to identify each path as different as well as display the total length. Obviously it won't really do the job for fabrication or construction documentation. One schedule (early) for schematic and another (later) for a more detailed summary of cabinets pieces and parts.
