The Green Building Code is Too Confusing

Green Building Law Update

I have spent just over a year thinking about the International Green Construction Code (IgCC). I know it has been one year because I received my first copy of the code at Greenbuild 2010. My conclusion today about the code is no different than it was one year ago: The IgCC is unnecessarily confusing. Take, for instance, the IgCC's basic setup -- it's two codes in one.

Don't be Double Clicker!

Revit OpEd

Should be no surprise, when software is installed a file association is created that links its special file extension with Windows. This allows you/me to double click on a file to open it with the correct application. Revit versions don't distinguish themselves with a special executable file for Windows to recognize them as different, they are all just "Revit.exe".

The saying ‘God is in the detail’.

DebunkTheBIM

is often credited to the architect, Mies van der Rohe. It is still a regularly used view, in fields beyond that architecture and buildings. "God is in the details," meaning opportunities come from digging into the details. Others say "The devil is in the details," implying that the details might cause failure. Both are true, I believe, one a bit more positive than the other.

Top Five Surety Bond Misconceptions

Construction Law Monitor

As many contractors know, starting a large construction project isn’t as simple as having your crew show up to the job site to begin work. There is a lot more involved in acquiring the appropriate permits, licensing and legal documents in order to be granted permission to start. To add to the pile of paperwork, surety bonds are usually the starting process to not only begin construction work, but it’s also required of many businesses prior to opening their doors.

Sticks and stones.will not hurt you.

It is the software-packages that can’t represent them well that will break-your-back as you try to make any headway in virtual construction. Take for example walls within buildings: Most architect-focused modelling packages create walls as monolithic entities, even when they are made up of numerous layers in real life (composites); Therefore, when one wants to represent walls in a ‘virtual construction’ or BIM context, the work method to follow is not user friendly or straight forward.

The Snowflake Problem: Why Energy Efficiency Projects Are So Damned Hard To Finance

As we all learned in kindergarten, every snowflake is unique. Now, studies have shown that is not entirely true (see here if you are marginally interested in the science of snowflakes), but close enough. Uniqueness may be good for snowflakes, but lousy for financial transactions. At least part of the problem in harnessing private capital to fund energy efficiency projects is the lack of standardization across projects.
